How many sensors are required in a typical installation? Where should they be located?
The number of zones with different occupancy patterns should dictate the number of sensors. In a small office application for example, it would be ideal to have a sensor in the office space and one in the conference area. Carbon dioxide distribution in a space is influenced by the same factors that influence temperature distribution. These factors include convection, diffusion and mechanical air movement. Much like temperature sensors, placement of CO2 sensors should be based on the zone to be controlled and anticipated loads (e.g. common occupancy density and patterns). For optimum control, there should be a CO2 sensor placed in every location where temperature controls are used. If an HVAC system is serving a series of zones with similar occupancy patterns, sensors placed in the return air ducting may be appropriate.

CO2 Sensor Sniffs Out Human Smugglers

Santa Barbara
A simple tool made by a Santa Barbara Company for measuring indoor air quality and ventilation in buildings is now being used to quickly identify if shipping containers are carrying a hidden human cargo. This new approach allows a container or truck to be quickly checked by measuring for CO2 exhaled by human occupants without having to open or enter the container. Working in cooperation with Envoronmental Care Ltd. of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Customs Department, Telaire modified its hand held CO2 sensor to sample shipping containers. Since January, Hong Kong Customs has used the sensor to check over 33,800 outbound shipping containers. In October of this year they found their first illegal human cargo. Over two million containers originate in Hong Kong annually.

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Combustion Sensing

Carbon dioxide is one of the most plentiful by products of the combustion process used by automobiles, trucks and fuel-fired appliances. For properly operated and maintained equipment CO2 will be produced in quantities 100 times or greater any other combustion byproduct considered harmful, including carbon monoxide, hexane, nitric oxide or nitrogen dioxide. It is also important to note that the catalytic converters used in all vehicles produced in North America will convert almost 100% of carbon monoxide and hexane to CO2. The figure below shows a breakdown of the byproducts of combustion by volume (in ppm) for a automobile at idle. Note that nitrogen and oxygen are also given off in combustion fumes, but are not considered harmful byproducts.
